About the Position:

The Grand Junction Fire Department is accepting applications for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics, with full-time and part-time positions available. As an EMT or a Paramedic for our department, you will provide immediate response to emergency and non-emergency calls including minor injuries, sudden illness, and casualties arising from road accidents, criminal violence, fires, and other incidents.

The Grand Junction Fire Department (GJFD) is the largest career fire department between Denver, CO and Salt Lake City, UT. Duties
What You'll Do as an EMT:
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency medical calls to provide appropriate medical interventions; assist paramedics as needed during medical calls; transport patients to hospitals.
- Obtain medical data including patient identification, medical history, type of accident or nature of illness, rescue measures preceding emergency care, care given at the scene and during transport, and changes in diagnostic signs.
- Prepare, submit, and maintain reports on EMS activities, incidents, accidents, and other related information.
- Perform station maintenance; identify deficiencies in equipment and quarters; correct deficiencies when possible or report to station officer.
- Operate, inspect, and maintain emergency response equipment and vehicles; perform minor repairs on equipment and vehicles or report deficiencies to proper staff for other disposition; monitor inventory, stock, and order necessary supplies.
- Participate in public relations, fire/safety education activities, school education programs, group activities, fire drills, courtesy walk-through visits, and phone inquiries.
- Perform at the Operations level at hazardous materials incidents.
- Maintain required certifications and participate in ongoing training related to EMS.

What You'll Do as a Paramedic:
- Provide emergency medical care and advanced life support at emergency and accident scenes which may include defibrillation, clearing airways, pulmonary ventilation, intubations, inserting IVs, splinting fractures, treating burns, emergency surgical procedures, performing CPR and administering medication; inform physicians of patient conditions.
- Performs activities required for and directly concerned with the prevention, control, or extinguishment of fires, including such incidental non-firefighting functions as housekeeping, equipment maintenance, lecturing, attending community fire drills, and inspecting buildings for fire hazards.
- Assume responsibility for EMS scene in the absence of higher level staff.
- Prepare, submit and maintain reports on EMS activities, incidents, accidents and other related information.
- Perform station maintenance; identify deficiencies in equipment and quarters; correct deficiencies when possible or report to station officer.
- Operate, inspect and maintain emergency response equipment and vehicles.
- Obtain medical data including patient identification, medical history, type of accident or nature of illness, rescue measures preceding emergency care, care given at the scene and during transport and changes in diagnostic signs.
- Participate in drills, training exercises, classes, and activities including but not limited to those related to emergency medical service, fire and other related areas.
- Maintain skill levels, new equipment and procedure familiarization, and certifications which are relevant and/or required for assigned responsibilities.
- Participate in public relations, fire/safety education activities, and fire prevention activities including station tours, fire safety/fire suppression education away from the station, school education programs, group activities, fire drills courtesy walk-through visits, and phone inquiries.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Qualifications
This position is a safety sensitive position, which means you will be subject to random drug screens due to the nature of the work performed.
What We're Looking For as an EMT:
- Colorado EMT Certification OR National Registry EMT Certification upon hire.
- CPR certificate upon hire.
- Valid Colorado Driver's License or ability to obtain.
- Must be able to distinguish red and green.
- Must successfully complete a candidate level 1582 physical.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 18 years of age at time of hire.
Experience and Training Guidelines for an EMT:
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
What We're Looking For as a Paramedic:
- Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
- Possession of a valid National Registry EMT Paramedic and State of Colorado EMT-P certificate.
- Possession of a valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support certificate.
- Possession of a Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers certificate.
- Possession of certification in the National Incident Management System.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, Hazardous Materials Awareness certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Driver Operator certificate.
Experience and Training Guidelines for a Paramedic:
- Two (2) years of experience in emergency medical services.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.; supplemented by the ability to complete specialized training in emergency medical services.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
