Job Overview

The Head Compounding Pharmacist leads a team of pharmacy
technicians in the compounding laboratory at Sweetgrass Pharmacy and
Compounding.  The ideal candidate has
extensive compounding experience and knowledge of regulatory compliance
pertaining to sterile and non-sterile compounding.  This role will be managing team expectations,
setting and accomplishing goals to meet the needs of our patients.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead a team of pharmacy lab technicians in
    compounding of preparations, filling and labeling of prescriptions and
    prepackaging of bulk medications.  This
    includes injections, infusions, ophthalmic preparations, and inhalation or
    irrigation solutions, capsules, oral liquids, topical medications, nasal
    preparations, suppositories, troches, tablet triturates or lollipops.
  • Develop business strategies for growth that may
    include new compound offerings, creation of formulas for appropriate beyond-use
    dates (BUDs).
  • Meet laboratory compliance standards for the lab
    and team including FDA, USP, BOP.
  • Manage all Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board
    (PCAB) and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) national accreditations
  • Perform order entry, communicate with providers
    for the purpose of receiving new prescription orders, clarification of
    prescriptions or refill authorizations, perform final check on prescriptions,
    counsel patients and answer questions from patients and providers.
  • Ensure aseptic processes including, but not
    limited to garbing, hand-hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, environmental
    monitoring, aseptic technique, and verification testing are performed according
    to policies and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels for re-order of low
    inventory or expiring chemicals, receive new inventory, ensure maintenance of
    SDS and Certificates of Analysis, oversee annual inventory.  Manage costs by using the budget efficiently
    and effectively.
  • Ensure performance of daily, weekly and monthly cleaning
    by having technicians use appropriate disinfectants and techniques and finally,
    ensure that environmental monitoring and verification testing is performed
    according to policies and procedures.  
  • Other Duties As Assigned

Education, License and Experience

  • License Required: Registered Pharmacist in the
    state of SC.  If not licensed in SC, must
    have the ability to transfer license upon start date
  • Minimum of 5 years practicing as a pharmacist
  • Compounding experience a must
  • Experience leading a team is a must

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Positive forward-thinking leader
  • Deep understanding of pharmacology, chemistry
    and patient care
  • Knowledge of and adherence to USP Chapter 797, 795
    and 800 standards and applicable Standard Operating Procedures. Standards for
    quality and safety must be consistently followed
  • Ability to develop strategies and goals to achieve
    per business objectives
  • Highly structured and organized. Attention to
    detail a must.
  • Must be collaborative and able to perform as
    part of a team
  • Must be competent in sterile and non-sterile compounding
  • Financial acumen required
  • Must have a deep understanding of applicable
    regulations and adhere to them at all times
  • Pharmacy Software – Pioneer is a plus

Work Environment:

  • Laboratory Environment
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Use of hands while compounding
  • Need to use computer to manage queue, answer
    messages
