Description of Job

The Work Unit: 


Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR)  


The Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) is responsible for ensuring that the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and, more broadly, the State of Colorado has the ability to effectively prepare for, monitor, detect, diagnose, investigate, and nimbly respond to all types of conditions, events, and disasters that impact the public’s health. The Medical Epidemiology Unit is a cross-cutting unit within the Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) Division. The Unit reports directly to the DCPHR Medical Director/State Epidemiologist, and provides clinical and epidemiological subject matter expertise to offices and branches within DCPHR. The Unit is responsible for crafting guidance and communication materials to a variety of public health partners including clinicians; advises DCPHR, Department, and state leadership on routine and emerging communicable disease issues; and investigates emerging communicable disease and other disease issues. 



What You Will Be Doing: 


The purpose of this position is to provide additional support to the Medical Epidemiology Unit, including on COVID-19 and other emerging issues. 


Responsibilities of the position include but not limited to: 


Provide clinical consultation for the COVID-19 response and other emerging diseases
  • Provide clinical expertise to support DCPHR’s response to COVID-19 and other emerging pathogens as part of the Medical Epidemiology Unit  
  • Create and disseminate guidance on COVID-19 and other communicable diseases for Colorado healthcare providers 
  • Provide clinical expertise on vaccination and treatment for COVID-19 and other diseases
  • Help respond to media requests that require subject matter expertise 
  • Advise the Communicable Disease Branch on clinical issues such as COVID-19 testing, emerging variants, and evolving issues 
  • Disseminate new scientific information on COVID-19 and other emerging pathogens through presentations to local public health, DPCHR, and the healthcare community including on “Med Epi Mondays” and provider ECHO calls 


Provide Medical Epidemiology support for COVID-19 and other DCPHR projects
  • Provide support as a medical epidemiologist on special projects or evaluations to better understand communicable diseases such as COVID-19 (including sequelae such as Long COVID) or other responses in Colorado  
  • Communicate epidemiology findings and recommended public interventions to providers and other stakeholders (e.g. LPHAs, public)

Minimum Qualifications:


Licensure/Certification:  No Substitutions 
Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado as a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)

Preferred Qualifications:     In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate in this position will have the following highly desirable experience and competencies: 

  • Relevant experience with the State of Colorado
  • Epidemiology training (such as MPH or related degree, or CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service) or work experience
  • Experience developing communication materials for the public
  • Experience giving presentations to scientific audiences or the general public

  • Pursuant to CDPHE policy, a background check is required for all positions at CDPHE. 
  • This is a term-limited position. Funding cannot be guaranteed beyond 07/31/2026. The incumbent in this position must be willing and able to resign on this date or when funds run out, whichever comes first. 
  • Critical Status: Must be available in the event of an emergency, (e.g., bio-terrorist attack, chemical attack, disease outbreak or all hazards) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
  • Critical Status: Must be available in the event of the activation of the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
  • Special Qualification: Professional Licensure - Colorado Medical Licensure
