Psychiatrist Supervisor

This position will provide services in a traditional clinic and non-traditional community setting, responsible for administrative and clinical supervision to psychiatrists and other physicians, physician Assistants (PAs), and nurse practitioners (NPs). Provides subject matter expertise in the development of policy and procedure. Provides thorough and comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management. Provides consultation, supervision, and collaboration with non-medical/medical staff, detailed clinical documentation. Reviews co-morbid medical illnesses, review/order laboratory tests; crises intervention. May provide assessment and psychiatric care of clients who have a wide range of psychiatric disorders that may be co-occurring with substance use disorders, physical illness, and/or intellectual disabilities. Integral member of multidisciplinary treatment teams. Provides expert consultation and guidance regarding diagnosis and treatment planning. Duties will include comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, assessments, medication management, family meetings and crisis intervention when needed. Documents all clinical information into an electronic health record with e-prescribing. Adheres to and complies with all relevant local, state, federal and regulatory standards.

• Provides administrative and clinical supervision to a team of clinical psychiatrists and physicians, as well as psychiatric nursing staff and support staff;
• Ensures that all psychiatrists meet standards established by the American Board of Medical Specialties;
• Maintains a half-time equivalent clinical caseload of diverse, complex and high-risk individuals served;
• Provides direct psychiatric services including psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, treatment and follow up care of CSB individuals served;
• Administers or directs the administration of treatment using group, milieu therapy, and other psychotherapeutic methods and medications;    
• Evaluates exceptionally difficult cases and recommends disposition;
• Acts as chief of an important component of the total program such as admissions, forensic, children’s adolescent, in-patient, outpatient, or other comparable component;
• Confers with and advises members of the medical staff, other agencies, relatives, and other interested persons on the care, treatment, and prognosis, of individuals served;
• Consults with physicians in other medical specialties when indicated for the well-being of patients;
• Reviews reports of patients’ laboratory tests to determine levels and effectiveness of medication;
• Participates in developing and coordinating policies and procedures related to psychiatric services;
• Interprets policies and procedures pertinent to the conduct of psychiatric treatment programs within assigned area;
• Prepares, conducts, and signs employee performance evaluations;
• Interviews prospective employees and recommends employee selection or ranks applications in terms of qualifications;
• Approves leave;
• Schedules work assignments;
• Investigates, and resolves or recommends solution to complaints;
• Reviews and identifies training needs of staff, initiates training recommendations, plans and conducts training, and demonstrates more efficient work methods;
• Conducts team staff meetings for the discussion of the diagnosis, treatment, or discharge of individuals served;
• Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work;
• Participates in quality assurance, and quality improvement studies, utilization review, risk management, and peer review activities.

• Thorough knowledge of modern psychiatric theory and practice;
• Extensive knowledge of causes, treatment, and prevention of mental illness;
• Considerable knowledge of available community resources useful in the treatment and prevention of emotional maladjustments;
• Considerable knowledge of the clinical use of educational and psychological tests and techniques;
• Considerable knowledge of how to read and interpret lab test results;
• Considerable knowledge of how to perform administrative processes for employees;
• Knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, and standards;
• Knowledge of how to assess the medical complexity of cases in order to appropriately assign them to staff; 
• Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relations with professional, administrative, and other persons working in related fields, such as local welfare and public health departments, schools, courts, law enforcement hospitals and other institutions;
• Ability to work with complex and high-risk individuals served;    
• Ability to effectively conduct staff meetings;
• Ability to identify training gaps and the means to fill that gap;
• Ability to supervise, lead, and inspire staff;
• Ability to plan and execute work effectively;
• Ability to listen carefully and exhibit emotional intelligence;
• Ability to supervise the work of a professional and diverse psychiatric support team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited school of medicine with possession of a medical degree; PLUS, successful completion of an accredited psychiatric residency program; plus, five years of Psychiatrist experience, including two years of managerial experience in a medical environment, and one year of supervisory experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

• A current and valid license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of hire;
• Eligibility for Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a psychiatrist at the time of hire; and 
• A current Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the DEA at the time of hire.

• Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency and American Board of Addiction Medicine certification.
• At least 2 years supervisory experience.
• Experience with treatment of serious mental illness and substance use disorders in a community setting.
• Experience with leadership and management of MD/NPs.
• Experience and skills working with child and adolescents and older adults.
