Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is committed to the health and well-being of all Nebraskans. As part of our mission, we are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated State Epidemiologist with a collaborative leadership philosophy to serve as a leader for our epidemiology initiatives and play a key role in safeguarding the health of Nebraska's residents.

Position Overview: The State Epidemiologist will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of epidemiological studies and public health programs in Nebraska. This pivotal role involves guiding data-driven public health decisions, directing disease surveillance systems, and providing expert consultation on epidemiological matters. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the ideal candidate will be a dynamic professional with a deep understanding of public health principles, infectious disease control, and epidemiological research.

Key Responsibilities:

Salary Range: $240,000-$260,000. Salary commensurate on education and experience.

  • Provide expert guidance and leadership in the development and implementation of state epidemiological initiatives and public health policies.

  • Analyze epidemiological data to identify trends and develop strategies for disease prevention and control.

  • Provide expert guidance on epidemiological methods and public health interventions.

  • Collaborate with federal, state, and local health agencies, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders.

  • Direct response efforts during public health emergencies, including outbreaks of infectious diseases.

  • Prepare and present reports on public health findings to DHHS leadership, government officials, and the public.

  • Develop policies and procedures to enhance public health preparedness and response capabilities.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to epidemiology and public health staff, fostering professional development and growth.

  • Represent Nebraska in national and regional epidemiology and public health forums.

  • Serve as a key advisor to DHHS leadership on epidemiological and public health matters.

  • Communicate epidemiological findings and public health information clearly and effectively to the media, public, and other key stakeholders.

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related field (MD, DVM, PhD, or DrPH preferred).

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in epidemiology or public health practice.

  • Proven track record in managing public health programs and leading epidemiological investigations.

  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in statistical software and data analysis tools.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.

  • Experience in emergency response and crisis management is highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of state and federal public health laws and regulations.
