Overview






Job Summary:

 

Demonstrates through behavior Decatur Morgan Hospital’s mission, vision and values.  Paramedic or intermediate license through appropriate state and national registries with valid driver’s license in good standing with the state.

 

Additionally, under supervision of licensed registered nurses, paramedic/intermediate performs various duties to assist in the care of patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.  These duties include, but are not limited to, obtaining EKG’s, venipuncture, ambulation assistance,  measuring vital signs and blood glucose, and transporting.









Responsibilities






Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

1.     Performs ambulance maintenance, equipment maintenance and ensures radio equipment is operational.

2.     Responds to calls within time guidelines and delivers care appropriate to needs of patient within basic and advanced life support guidelines.

3.     Maintains competency in delivery of emergency medical care requiring the use of suction, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, medications, cardiac monitors/defibrillator/pacer and performance of other skills within scope of practice.

4.     Participates in continuous education program to improve competence in ambulance service and operations.

5.     Working knowledge of city / county geography and ability to safety drive an ambulance under emergency conditions.

6.     Completes patient care reports at time of care delivery and accurately documents care.

7.     Adheres to facility guidelines along with state / federal laws, regulations and guidelines for emergency medical services.

8.     Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with local pre-hospital providers, hospital and within the community that is served.

9.     Able to lift and move patients as required to provide optimum care.

10.   Communicates with receiving facility to receive medical direction and provide critical information.

11.   Communicates with call coordinators and / or dispatch to receive call data. 

12.   Perform basic patient care with minimal supervision and within established policies on all age groups within the Emergency Department, such as but not limited to vital signs, venipuncture within hospital guidelines.

 









Qualifications






Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:

·         Uses common sense and special medical skills to care for the sick

·         Understands technical information from supervisors, charts, reference books,  manuals and labels

·         Uses eyes, ears, hands and fingers with skill

·         Acts quickly in an emergency, rendering appropriate life-saving measures

·         Communicates with people

·         Change from one duty to another frequently

·         Follow and/or give precise instructions

·         Records and interprets information accurately

·         Able to care for patients of all ages

 

License or Certification:
Licensure & Certification: Paramedic License in the state of Alabama required

 

Reasoning, Mathematical and Language Development are indicative of the general level of development required to do this job.  Some, but not necessarily all, areas mentioned in this section will be included in this job.

 

Reasoning Development:                                

Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.  Deal with problems involving several variables in or from standardized situations.

Mathematical Development:

Add and subtract two digit numbers.  Multiply and divide 10’s, and 100’s by 2,3,4,5.  Perform the four basic arithmetic operations with coins and as part of a dollar.  Perform operations with units such as cup, pint, and quart; inch, foot, and yard; or ounce and pound.

Language Development:          

Reading:

Read and understands instructions, safety rules, etc. Records data via paper and electronic means. 

 

Speaking:

Speak with poise, voice-control, and confidence, using correct English and well-modulated voice.

 

RELATIONSHIPS TO DATA, PEOPLE AND THINGS:

 

Data:                           

Compiling: Gathering, collecting and classifying information about data, people or things.  Reporting and/or carrying out a prescribed action in relation to information is frequently involved.

Manual dexterity: Use of body members or special devices to work, and perform functions pertinent to accomplishment of job assignment.

 

Education:  High school graduate or GED.  Maintain current BLS certification.
